MIYAKO’S EYES snapped open. She sat upright, breathing hard. Loose strands of hair stuck to the sides of her face. Somehow she’d managed to fall asleep in the strange sea sponge bed, cocooned in the thick woolen sleeping bag, surrounded by coral furniture and breathing walls. At least that’s what it felt like; the walls were covered in that disgusting-looking membrane that exhaled humid air into the room. The queen had been certain she’d never be able to drift off. According to the old-fashioned clock on her bedside table, it was well past midnight.

She pressed her hands against her chest. Her heart galloped away behind her rib cage. The words Kylee had spoken in the dream seemed to echo in her mind, bringing tears to her eyes.

“You’ve ruined me, you’ve ruined Father, and you’ve guaranteed our planet’s ruin by agreeing to the Mirelings’ terms!”

It was merely a manifestation of her worst fears and new insecurities, she reasoned. Kylee would never say such things out loud. Even if she did think them in private. After everything Miyako had learned about her daughter in the last few months, however, she couldn’t be sure. The queen squeezed her eyes shut. The tears that fell created warm tracks across her cold skin. At this point, Miyako would’ve done anything, said anything, endured anything, if only she could see her daughter safe.

The hands splayed across her chest turned into fists in her lap.

The union between Mirelings and humans had to happen. No matter how she’d hurt Kylee in the past, this couldn’t change. Once they were together again…the two of them would talk. They’d find a compromise, some way to make Kylee happy, but it couldn’t include Taren Platinum. That was simply nonnegotiable.

Miyako nodded, wiping her cheeks. She would be transparent with her daughter. Once Kylee knew how precious she was, she would yield. She’d see reason. Miyako was certain of it. And after the Treaty of Mite was signed, things would be different between the queen and the princess. Miyako would find some way to prove to her daughter that she could change, be a better mother, maybe even a friend. The queen would make things right. But Kylee wasn’t the only person she’d wronged.

Miyako steeled her nerves and climbed out of bed.
